Boston Online Film Critics Association Goes for Mad Max, Creed, Kristen Stewart, Tangerine

Mad Max: Fury Road has notched another Best Picture win this season, this time with the Boston Online Film Critics Association. The action blockbuster also won the top prize with the National Board of Review earlier in the week. The film also picked up three tech wins; Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Original Score. Also repeating from the NBR is Sylvester Stallone, gathering his second Best Supporting Actor win for Creed. His Creed co-star Michael B. Jordan snags his first Best Actor win of the season and the film was #2 on their Top 10 list. Previous Best Picture winners with the BOFCA have been Snowpiercer (2014), 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012).

In the actress race it’s a repeat of the New York Film Critics Circle with Brooklyn‘s Saoirse Ronan and Clouds of Sils Maria‘s Kristen Stewart triumphing. This could be a very interesting narrative for Stewart. If the critics keep giving her wins it could force IFC’s hand a bit to give her an honest push and make her a real contender for an Oscar nomination this year. The film also ended up on their Top 10 list.

Elsewhere, the Boston-based Spotlight picked up two awards; for Best Ensemble and Best Screenplay, as well as a Top 10 mention. The trans indie comedy/drama Tangerine landed in the group’s Top 10 films of the year, as did Anomalisa, despite that film losing Best Animated Film to Inside Out.
