NAACP Image Award Nominations: Creed Rules, Tangerine Snubbed
The NAACP Image Award nominations for motion pictures were announced today and box office hits Creed and Straight Outta Compton both scored big with six and five apiece, respectively, but new indies from Spike Lee (Chi-Raq) and Cary Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation) also came on strong, with four apiece. Dope also scored an Outstanding Motion Picture nomination as well as for its Writing and Directing.
But once again, the black trans indie Tangerine was snubbed, just as it was from the African-American Film Critics Association yesterday. For such a hugely talked about film that has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85 on Metacritic, it seems like the avoidance is very intentional. The Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture category is built almost entirely on either little seen films or flat-out critical bombs. It was even ignored in the Independent Film category.
Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor earned two nominations today, in Actor and Supporting Actor and Creed and Chi-Raq grabbed two Supporting Actress nominations each.
