58 Films Eligible for Golden Globe Foreign Film
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (aka the Golden Globes) add another feather in their cap (along with an open bar awards show) by revealing their eligible selections for the Foreign Film Globe. Since the HPFA don’t follow the ridiculous restriction of allowing only a single film from each country to be submitted, what we have are films that didn’t get selected by their country’s Oscar selection committee and multiple titles from China, Canada, Finland, France, Greece and Japan.
Most notable on the list is the year’s most buzzed about and most controversial film, France’s Blue is the Warmest Color. Since the film didn’t make its theatrical debut before the cutoff date it could not be considered France’s Oscar submission (Renoir is, which is also eligible here). The film is widely considered to be a shoe-in for a nomination and a possible win here.
Adding further confusion to the mix, The Broken Circle Breakdown is here as a submission from the Netherlands despite being a Belgian film (where it was submitted for the Oscars). Other high profile choices like Japan’s The Wind Rises from Hayao Miyazaki and Agnieszka Holland’s Burning Bush (which was disqualified for having debuted on television) make the cut here and are viable contenders.
