‘The Farewell,’ ‘Last Black Man in San Francisco,’ ‘Marriage Story,’ ‘Uncut Gems’ Lead Gotham Awards Nominations
Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Uncut Gems from the Safdie Brothers topped the 2019 IFP Gotham Awards nominations this morning with three apiece.
The Farewell, Marriage Story and Uncut Gems all earned nominations in Best Feature while The Last Black Man in San Francisco earned screenplay and Breakthrough Director nods. The Gothams do not have a Best Director category.
Hustlers received a single nomination, in Best Feature, and joins the top three nomination getters with Waves to round out that category. Best Actor was good if your name started with an A. Adam Driver, Adam Sandler, Aldis Hodge and André Holland all received nominations alongside Willem Dafoe (in The Lighthouse). Best Actress was filled with critical faves Awkwafina, Mary Kay Place, Florence Pugh, Alfre Woodard and Elisabeth Moss.
The nominations are decided on by a very small group of journalists and filmmakers (less than 5 per nominating category) but as the first awards body to enter the fray, they can kickstart campaigns that take nominees and winners all the way to the Oscars. Moonlight and Spotlight were previous Best Feature winners here; Julianne Moore started her run at the Gothams and Isabelle Huppert began her run with a win here that eventually led to a Golden Globe win and her first Oscar nomination.
In IFP’s two television categories, Emmy winners Chernobyl and When They See Us were nominated for Breakthrough Series – Long Format and Emmy nominees Russian Doll and PEN15 were nominated for Breakthrough Series – Short Format.
Winners will be announced on December 2nd. Here is the full list of nominations.
