2020 Critics’ Choice Awards: ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ named Best Picture; Sam Mendes and Bong Joon Ho tie for Best Director
The 25th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards have chosen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as the Best Picture of the year. The Quentin Tarantino-directed love letter to 1960s moviemaking was nominated for 12 CCAs and also earned wins for Tarantino’s screenplay, Best Supporting Actor Brad Pitt and the film’s production design.
Best Director was one of the night’s many ties, going to Golden Globe directing winner Sam Mendes (1917) and Bong Joon Ho (Parasite). 1917 also picked up wins for cinematography and film editing while Parasite was named best foreign language film in an award given on the red carpet.
The acting awards followed the Golden Globes to the letter, with Joaquin Phoenix, Renée Zellweger, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern taking prizes.
A handful of awards were given out in grouped packaged to save time (this is show that has over three dozen categories) including the screenplay awards which went to the aforementioned Once for original and to Greta Gerwig for her adaptation of Little Women.
The Irishman was the nomination leader going in (with 14) but only managed a single win, for its Ensemble.
While the Critics’ Choice is often a close predictor of the Oscars (and prides themselves on it), their winners last year were far from what the Academy ended up choosing. They matched with director (Alfonso Cuarón) and both supporting wins (Mahershala Ali and Regina King) but the CCA went Roma for Best Picture (Green Book won the Oscar), Christian Bale for Vice (Oscars went for Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody) and Best Actress was another infamous tie, going to Glenn Close for The Wife and Lady Gaga for A Star Is Born. Neither ended up winning the Oscar, which was snagged by The Favourite’s Olivia Colman. The screenplay wins also didn’t align.
Over on television, the love poured out for Fleabag and Succession in comedy and drama, respectively as each won the top TV prize as well as lead acting wins for Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jeremy Strong. Regina King won Best Actress in a Drama Series for Watchmen and Bill Hader won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry.
Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us fared better at the CCAs than at the Emmys, winning Best Limited Series plus another win for Jharrel Jerome in lead actor.
The 25th Critics Choice Awards was hosted by Taye Diggs and broadcast live on the CW Network on Sunday night.
Here is the full list of nominations with winners in bold.
