26th Critics’ Choice Awards: ‘Nomadland’ win Best Picture, ‘The Crown,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ take series prizes
The 26th Critics’ Choice Movie Awards were held tonight in a partially in person but mostly virtual ceremony and Nomadland was named Best Picture. Chloé Zhao won Best Director for the film and used her speech to thank sound designer Michael Wolf Snyder, who passed away this week. “We’ll see you down the road,” she said. Zhao also won Adapted Screenplay.
Chadwick Boseman won Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, one of his four posthumous nominations; two individual and two as part of ensembles. As she did at the Golden Globes, the late Boseman’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award saying “it’s hard to find joy in these moments.” Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom also won for Hair & Makeup and Costume Design.
Carey Mulligan won Best Actress for Promising Young Woman, remarking that it’s the eve of International Women’s Day and thanked director and Original Screenplay winner Emerald Fennell for pulling off the film in with a 23-day shoot.
There was one tie this evening, in Editing. The winners were The Trial of the Chicago 7 (which also won the Ensemble award) and Sound of Metal. One Night in Miami won Best Song, leaving just two Best Picture nominees going home empty handed tonight, Da 5 Bloods and News of the World. Mank went into tonight’s ceremony with 12 nominations but managed just a single win, for Production Design.
8-year old Alan Kim won the Best Young Actor/Actress award for his performance in Minari and went through in his speech, first happy and giggling to crying but all the while remembering everyone’s names to thank, a consummate professional and the most heartwarming speech of the night. Minari also won the Foreign Language Film award.
The Crown dominated the television drama wins, winning four of its six nominations including Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series fo Josh O’Connor, Best Actress in a Drama Series for Emma Corrin and Gillian Anderson for Best Supporting Actress. Ironically, going on at the very same time was the highly anticipated Oprah interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, on their exit from royal life.
Ted Lasso went 3/3 winning Best Comedy Series, Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Sudeikis and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham, in the best TV speech of the night, thanking her girlfriend and screaming “What is going on?!?”
Emmy Award winner Zendaya (HBO’s Euphoria, Netflix’s Malcolm & Marie, for which she’s nominated tonight) will receive the 5th annual See Her Award. The honor will be presented by her Malcolm & Marie co-star John David Washington during the live ceremony. The SeeHer Award recognizes a woman who embodies the values set forth by the SeeHer movement, to push boundaries, defy stereotypes and acknowledge the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape. SeeHer is the leading global movement for accurate portrayals of women and girls in media. Led by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), SeeHer is a collective of leading marketers, media organizations and industry influencers committed to creating advertising and media content that portrays women and girls as they truly are. Previous award recipients are Kristen Bell, Viola Davis, Claire Foy, and Gal Gadot.
Taye Diggs returned to host for his third consecutive year at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California.
