Series Nominations Include Beef, I’m a Virgo, Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, The Last of Us and Swarm

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today the nominations for the 33rd Annual Gotham Awards, singling out 20 feature films, 11 series, and 30 performances in ten award categories and for the most part maintained their push and support of independent films despite the removal of budget constraints earlier this year. Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers led the field with four nominations: International Feature, Screenplay, Lead Performance (Andrew Scott) and Supporting Performance (Claire Foy).

A.V. Rockwell’s A Thousand and One and Celine Song’s Past Lives earned three nominations apiece, including Best Feature, Breakthrough Director and Lead Performance (Teyana Taylor and Greta Lee, respectively. Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest also grabbed three nominations, including one for Sandra Hüller’s supporting performance.

Other Best Feature nominees were Ira Sachs’ Passages, Tina Satter’s Reality and Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up. Joining Rockwell and Song for Breakthrough Director were Raven Jackson, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Georgia Oakley for Blue Jean and Michelle Garza Cervera for Huesera.

Continuing their non-gendered acting categories that started in 2021, of the 10 lead nominees, seven were women or female-identified (the same as last year) and in supporting the ratio was 6-4 (vs 5-5 last year).

The 33rd Gotham Awards ceremony will take place on Monday, November 27 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Back in August, the Gotham Film & Media Institute has announced sweeping changes for its upcoming 33rd Annual Gotham Awards, including removing the budget restriction for submissions, which had previously been set at $35M, just above the $30M budget caps the Film Independent Spirit Awards use. Several studios opted to not submit their films including Oppenheimer (Universal), The Color Purple (Warner Bros) and Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon (Apple). Barbie (Warner Bros) was submitted for consideration and earned a supporting nomination for Ryan Gosling. No other big budget major studio release was nominated today.

For the first time this year, international films were eligible for the following categories: Outstanding Lead Performance, Outstanding Supporting Performance, Best Screenplay, and Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. Best Feature remained for U.S. features only and Best International Feature remained open to all non-U.S. features. International films were once again eligible for Best Documentary Feature.

Previously announced awards and tributes include Netflix’s Rustin, director George C. Wolfe‘s look of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin, the architect of the 1963 March on Washington, that stars Colman Domingo, will receive its Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice. With the Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice, The Gotham will honor Bayard Rustin, the activist, organizer of the 1968 March on Washington, and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner, while celebrating director George C. Wolfe and his remarkable achievement in bringing Rustin’s story to life.

Maestro, the upcoming Netflix film by Bradley Cooper, will receive the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute. With the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute, The Gotham will honor New York legend Leonard Bernstein, the acclaimed musician, conductor, composer, teacher, and author, while celebrating Cooper and his masterful effort cinematically capturing his story.

Air, the Amazon MGM Studios sports dramedy directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker Ben Affleck, will receive The Gotham Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute. With the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute, The Gotham will honor both the visionaries behind the Michael Jordan partnership and celebrate Ben Affleck’s film that brings this story to life.

No one associated with the three films receiving tributes earned an individual competitive nomination.

“We are proud to announce this year’s Gotham Award nominees and look forward to celebrating these amazing storytellers in a few weeks. The Gotham Awards in many ways reflects the industry and community we serve. Seen by this year’s nominees, storytelling knows no boundaries as our industry continues to find new audiences across the globe,” said Sharp.

At last year’s 32nd Annual Gotham Awards, which took place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, Everything Everywhere All at Once kicked off its massive award season by winning Best Feature and the Outstanding Supporting Performance Award for Ke Huy Quan (both went on to win respective Oscars), Charlotte Wells took home the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director award for her feature debut Aftersun, and W. Kamau Bell earned the Breakthrough Nonfiction Series Award for his four-part series We Need to Talk About Cosby
