Amazon’s ‘The Report’ moves its files into Oscar season
Amazon Studios’ The Report, from Scott Z. Burns, is packing up and moving deeper into Oscar season. It will now debut in theaters on November 15 and then show up two weeks later, November 29, on Amazon Prime Video.
The film was previously set for a September 27 bow followed by a streaming debut of October 10. It will next be seen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
This new release strategy for Amazon, it had previously adopted a three-month theatrical to streaming window, seems to be a direct result of its main streaming competition, Netflix, who earned a massive 10 Oscar nominations and three wins with Roma last year after changing its strategy for the first time and releasing the film in theaters for two weeks before its streaming debut.
The Report made its debut at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival where it received a standing ovation and was scooped up by Amazon for a huge $14 million. The film chronicles the true story of Daniel J. Jones, who uncovered extreme interrogation tactics used by the CIA after 9/11. Jones is played by Academy Award nominee Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) and features four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening as California senator Dianne Feinstein.
The film also stars Jon Hamm, Maura Tierney and Michael C. Hall and is produced by Burns, Steven Soderbergh, Jennifer Fox, Danny Gabai of Vice Studios, Eddy Moretti and Michael Sugar, and executive produced by Nancy Dubuc, Shane Smith and Natalie Farrey of Vice Studios, Lila Yacoub, Michael DiVerdi, Vincent Landay and TJ Rinomato.
This move may mean some adjusting of your awards predictions for the film. It puts Bening in better shape for supporting actress consideration but for Driver, who has another major lead performance in Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story (for Netflix, shots fired!), this could prove a battle with himself.
