American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Like the Look of The Imitation Game, Birdman, Unbroken
The American Society of Cinematographers revealed their nominations for 2014 films this morning and with it came the expected mentions for Birdman, Mr. Turner and Unbroken but surprised us all with a nomination for Oscar Faura’s lensing of The Imitation Game. With no previous ASC or Oscar nominations it made this quite a get for The Imitation Game, whose stock now rises a bit in the Oscar race.
Roger Deakins adds an 11th nomination with the ASC (to match his 11 Oscar nominations) for Unbroken. He has won this award three times before (Skyfall, 2011; The Man Who Wasn’t There, 2001; The Shawshank Redemption, 1994) and also a Lifetime Achievement award. Rounding out the list is Robert Yeoman’s work in The Grand Budapest Hotel. That film continues to dominate the guilds.
Missing from this list are some usual suspects and predicted hopefuls: Jeff Cronenweth’s work in Gone Girl, Hoyte Van Hoytama (Interstellar) and Robert Elswit (Nightcrawler). The winners will be announced on February 15th.
