BAFTA Nominations: Grand Budapest Leads with 11; Oscar Hopefuls Stay Strong
The EE British Academy Film Awards announced their nominations for 2014 films and in its usual flair hit us with shocks and surprises. Not the least of which was Mike Leigh’s Mr. Turner only showing up in the tech categories but shut out of Best Film, Outstanding British Film and Leading Actor (Timothy Spall). Screeners and visibility hit Selma yet again as it was snubbed entirely. In the Leading Actor category Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) and Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel) made it over Spall and Selma‘s David Oyelowo. In Leading Actress, Amy Adams (Big Eyes) surprised, besting Marion Cotillard even as her film (Two Days, One Night) received a Film Not in the English Language nomination.
Nightcrawler and Whiplash proved yet again to be forces in the Oscar race with the former grabbing four nominations in Leading Actor – Jake Gyllenhaal, Supporting Actress – Rene Russo, Editing and Original Screenplay. Whiplash snagged snagged five, hitting Original Screenplay, Editing, Sound, Supporting Actor – J.K. Simmons and a major get – Best Director. Both Jake Gyllenhaal and J.K. Simmons have hit every possible precursor (Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, Broadcast Film Critics and now BAFTA) going into Oscar nomination morning.
The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the nominations with 11 and Boyhood, Birdman, The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything all made strong showings, positioning themselves nicely for next week’s Oscar nominations.
