‘Barbie,’ ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Wonka’ lead 2023 Hollywood Music in Media Awards Nominations
The Hollywood Music in Media Awards (HMMA) today announced the 2023 nominees for scores and songs in film and other visual media categories where Barbie, The Little Mermaid and Wonka led the way with four nominations apiece. The 14th HMMA Awards will be presented Wednesday, November 15 at The Avalon in Hollywood, CA.
Barbie earned nominations for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Score, two for Song – Feature Film (“What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken”) as well as for Ryan Gosling’s onscreen performance of “I’m Just Ken.” The live action version of The Little Mermaid‘s nods came from its two original songs, “For The First Time” and “Wild Uncharted Waters” as well as star Halle Bailey’s performance of the former. Bailey also found herself nominated for her onscreen song performance of “Keep It Movin’” from the upcoming movie musical adaptation of The Color Purple. Wonka was also a double song nominee, for “A World of Your Own” and “You’ve Never Had Chocolate Like This” as well as Timothée Chalamet for his performance of “A World of Your Own.”
In the top general category of Score for a Feature Film the nominees included American Fiction, Killers of the Flower Moon (a posthumous nomination for Robbie Robertson), Oppenheimer, Rustin and Saltburn., while the Song for a Feature Film category also included “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, “Road to Freedom” from Rustin and “I Am” from Origin.
Past HMMA winners who have gone on to win Oscars include: Billie Eilish and FINNEAS for No Time to Die; Hans Zimmer for Dune; Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste for Soul; Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker; Ludwig Goransson for Black Panther; Alexandre Desplat for Shape of Water; songs from Judas & the Black Messiah, La La Land, A Star is Born, and more.
This year, the HMMAs will also honor composer/songwriter Marc Shaiman with an Outstanding Career Achievement Award.
