‘Beale Street,’ ‘The Favourite’ lead Austin Film Critics Association (AFCA) nominations
If Beale Street Could Talk from Barry Jenkins and The Favourite from Yorgos Lanthimos lead the Austin Film Critics Association (AFCA) nomination with 8 apiece, including Best Film and Best Director while Alfonso Cuarón’s ROMA comes in with six.
Blindspotting and Suspiria rounded out the Best Film nominees. Both films only earned one other mention apiece – Best First Film and Best Original Score, respectively. Alternately, Best Director found room for two female directors – Debra Granik (Leave No Trace) and Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here) – each as one of only two noms for their films as well.
They are the first group to snub Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) but include Bradley Cooper in their acting lineup. Instead, they went for Toni Collette (Hereditary), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade), Regina Hall (Support the Girls) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). Overall, A Star Is Born only earned two nominations: Best Actor and Best First Film (both for Cooper).
Brian Tyree Henry was a double nominee, earning mentions in Supporting Actor (for If Beale Street Could Talk) as well as Breakthrough Artist for his 2018 body of work that also includes Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Widows. Supporting Actor also included Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther), Steven Yeun (Burning) and double Grants – Hugh (Paddington 2) and Richard (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), leaving high profile names like Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet and Sam Elliott out.
The group also includes categories for Stunts and Motion Capture performances.
Here is the full list of nominations. Winners will be announced Monday, January 7, 2019.
