‘Belfast’ wins AARP Movies for Grownups Best Picture; ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Mare of Easttown’ are TV winners
Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film Belfast won the AARP Movies for Grownups Best Picture award in a ceremony held March 18 via Great Performances on PBS and hosted by Alan Cumming. The film had led the nominations with eight but managed just the top award.
Film acting awards went to Will Smith (King Richard) and Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) in lead and Jared Leto (House of Gucci) and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard) in supporting. All but Leto are Oscar-nominated for their performances.
Jane Campion won Best Director for The Power of the Dog, her film’s only win, and Tony Kushner won named Best Screenwriter, West Side Story‘s sole win. The group’s special awards like Best Time Capsule, went to Spencer, while Best Buddy Picture went to the Tom Hanks robot and dog movie Finch.
In television the winners were Ted Lasso, Jean Smart, Michael Keaton and Mare of Easttown.
Lily Tomlin, recipient of eight Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, and a Grammy Award, among many others, received this year’s Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award.
“We are thrilled to honor Lily Tomlin, a trailblazer whose six-decade career as an actress, comedian, writer and advocate continues to break through boundaries today,” said AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins. “She’s an icon across mediums – as fresh, innovative, and influential today as when she revolutionized TV on Laugh-In in the ‘60s. In her current role on Grace and Frankie, in which she portrays issues of aging with respect, originality and hilarity, she continues to dismantle outdated stereotypes, demonstrating why she remains at the leading edge of pop culture.”
Ms. Tomlin said, “I am honored to receive this award from AARP. There are so few grownups in the world. I am happy to be one. I feel I am not only a grownup, but I am mature for my age and that’s the truthhhhh!”
