‘Birdman’ Leads Chicago Film Critics Association Nominations
As it did this week at the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes, Fox Searchlight’s Birdman lands the most nominations at today’s announcement of the Chicago Film Critics Association with nine. The Grand Budapest Hotel, also from Fox Searchlight (who scored a massive 21 nominations), also continues to rake in kudos landing right behind with eight. Jake Gyllenhaal also follows up his SAG and GG noms with a mention here for Nightcrawler and looks to be heading towards another Oscar nomination. Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin pulls off some big mentions here in both Best Picture and Best Actress for Scarlett Johansson and LAFCA Best Supporting Actress winner Agata Kulesza (Ida) also came up with a nomination.
In Best Director we only see a 3/5 match-up with Best Picture as David Fincher (Gone Girl) and Christopher Nolan (Interstellar) take the place of the directors of Best Picture nominees Under the Skin (Glazer) and Whiplash from Damien Chazelle.
Notably missing from every category except Best Actor (David Oyelowo), Selma‘s lack of presence here is quite surprising. One has to imagine that if Roger Ebert were still with us that it would have been heavily featured in multiple categories.
