‘Black Dog’ Wins 2024 Un Certain Regard Award,’ ‘The Story of Souleymane’ Takes Jury and Acting Prizes | Cannes
Chinese director Guan Hu’s Black Dog has taken the top prize in the section from Xavier Dolan‘s jury, which was comprised of French-Senegalese screenwriter and director Maïmouna Doucouré, Moroccan director, screenwriter and producer Asmae El Moudir, German-Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps, and American film critic, director, and writer Todd McCarthy.
Black Dog details the story of Lang, a man recently released from jail, who returns to his hometown in Northwest China. As part of a dog patrol tasked with clearing stray dogs before the 2008 Olympics, he bonds with a black stray. The two lonely souls embark on a new journey together.
Other big wins went to Boris Lojkine’s The Story of Souleymane for the Jury Prize and and performance award to Abou Sangare, with Rungano Nyoni’s On Becoming a Guinea Fowl and Roberto Minervini’s The Damned tying for Best Director.
Winners of the in Competition films will be revealed at the closing ceremony of the 77th Cannes Film Festival tomorrow, Saturday, May 25.
