‘Carol’ Romances Gay & Lesbian Critics Awards
Oscars, Schmoscars.
As a member of this critics group, I am pleased to announce that Todd Haynes’ Carol has swept the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GALECA) awards today with five victories, including Film of the Year, Director of the Year and Film Actress of the Year (Cate Blanchett). Haynes also won the Wilde Artist of the Year award (named after the original wit himself, Oscar Wilde). Leonardo DiCaprio took Film Actor of the Year for The Revenant and Sean Baker’s Tangerine won Unsung Film of the Year. In keeping with fun, gay fashion there’s also a Campy Flick of the Year award and this year it was won by Magic Mike XXL.
On the television side, Transparent, Empire and Looking took top honors and Amy Schumer continued her healthy awards season by picking the Wilde Wit of the Year award. Diva Aretha Franklin won the TV Musical Performance of the Year for her amazing rendition of “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” at the Kennedy Center Honors.
