Now, while this guild can give us an outline of what the eventual Sound Mixing Oscar nominees will be they’ve only gone 5/5 twice in the last 15 years (2000 and 2003), we can probably toss out Iron Man 3 right now. Rush missing yet another guild, especially this one, is surprising and the appearance of Lone Survivor bodes well for its chances although it seems more like a Sound Editing nominee. Inside Llewyn Davis, Gravity and Captain Phillips are all but assured a nomination, especially with the last two being probably Best Picture nominees. But what of 12 Years a Slave and/or American Hustle? Is there room for both or just one come Thursday? A good bet would be for 12YAS but Hustle isn’t far behind. Animated films have done well in the Sound categories in the past (albeit more in Sound Editing) so look for Frozen or Monsters University to possibly crack Oscar’s top five.
