Critics’ Choice Awards: ‘ROMA,’ ‘Mrs. Maisel,’ ‘The Americans’ come out on top
ROMA has won the Critics’ Choice for the Best Picture of 2018 from the Broadcast Film Critics Association. The film won four awards, the most of any film, also taking Director and Cinematography (for for Alfonso Cuarón) and Foreign Language Film
The Favourite went in with the most nominations, 14, but only managed two wins: Best Ensemble and Best Actress in a Comedy for Olivia Colman.
Speaking of Best Actress, in the group’s top actress award there was a tie. Both Glenn Close (The Wife) and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) won. The two are the year’s dueling frontrunners in the category and this tie won’t make predicting much easier. We still have SAG and BAFTA in the coming weeks.
Christian Bale won two of Vice‘s three awards, Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy. In his lengthy and wily speech, he thanked Louis Armstrong, “because, why not?” he said. Bale won the Golden Globe last weekend for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy.
The screenplay wins went to Paul Schrader for First Reformed (Original) and Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk (Adapted). Beale Street found another win in Regina King taking Best Supporting Actress, as she did last week at the Globes. Bizarrely, she is not nominated for SAG or BAFTA so this category will see some new winners this month and next before we find out who ultimately will win the Oscar.
The Americans, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story took television series prizes, while Bill Hader (Barry), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) were among the acting winners. Another actress tie happened when Amy Adams (Sharp Objects) and Patricia Arquette (Escape at Dannemora) both won Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television. Arquette won this award last week at the Globes.
Claire Foy (First Man, The Queen) received the #SeeHer award, presented to “a woman who pushes boundaries to help change stereotypes and recognize the importance of authentic portrayals of women across the entertainment landscape.”
Longtime CBS show creator Chuck Lorre is the recipient of the Creative Achievement Award, which recognized his body of work over decades in television. The awards was presented to him by the cast of The Big Bang Theory.
Positioning the Critics’ Choice Awards the day before Oscar nomination voting closes could prove to be a shrewd one, especially for a group that prides itself on being good predictors. Oscar noms will be announced on Tuesday, January 22nd.
