Critics Choice Television Association Award Nominations: The Americans In; Mad Men Out
The CCTA, an off-shoot of the BFCA (Broadcast Film Critics Association, revealed their nominations today, just one day after the TCA and they’re pretty explosive. The CCTA has often championed shows and performers that have had little or no support from the Primetime Emmys (like Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany or Busy Phillips from Cougar Town) and this year is no different. The second season of FX’s The Americans, ongoing support for Sons of Anarchy and the new miniseries Fargo catapulted the network to a field-best 19 nominations, besting HBO’s 18. Matthew Rhys, from The Americans, continues to find welling support for a potential Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy nomination today.
Netflix still proves to be a force, but maybe weakened a bit, with Orange is the New Black landing nominations in Comedy Series, Supporting Actress (Laverne Cox and Kate Mulgrew) and Guest Actress (Uzo Aduba) yet strangely missing a lead nom for Taylor Schilling. House of Cards only landed a nomination for Robin Wright; no Kevin Spacey or Drama Series. Hannibal finally got some love with a Lead Actor nomination for Hugh Dancy but alas, not for the titular character himself, played by Mads Mikkelsen. The Comedy Central show Broad City surprised with two nominations; one for Comedy Series and for one of the leads, Ilana Glazer.
Showtime’s Masters of Sex got very broad support, earning a Drama Series nomination as well as four acting nods; for leads Lizzy Caplan and Michael Sheen as well as guest performers Allison Janney and Beau Bridges. Conversely, the network’s former awards champ Homeland was shut out. Over on AMC it was the same story as their awards superstar Mad Men ended up with a whopping ZERO nominations. After netting nothing from the TCA yesterday and a 0-17 shutout at the Emmys last year, it doesn’t bode well for that show’s first half of its final season. Even the network’s The Walking Dead earned an acting nomination, a deserved one, for Melissa McBride.
