FINAL 2022 Emmy Nomination Predictions: COMEDY SERIES categories

This year’s batch of comedy contenders is going to feel like a high school reunion with a slew of different years converging on the same location at the same time. So many past winners returning after hiatuses competing with new era winners for the first time, making for one of the most exciting races in these categories in a long time.

This year will see reigning comedy series winner Ted Lasso (AppleTV+) will finally meet The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Prime Video), who will reunite with both Atlanta (FX) and Barry (HBO) on the comedy cruise ship with Hacks (HBO Max), all of whom have shared acting, directing and writing wins in their respective years. But there’s some new kids in school, and in the building, this year. Abbott Elementary (ABC) is poised to take the mantel from black-ish as the sole representation for network shows and Hulu’s murder mystery farce Only Murders in the Building is hoping to making a killing with nominations, too.

As we discussed on our comedy prediction podcast, the increase in number of nominations and the sliding scale based on submissions hasn’t made predicting harder, it’s made it even tougher. You can see in many categories where AwardsWatch Editor-In-Chief and AW TV Editor Tyler Doster are lockstep in several categories right up the last choice but then diverge. On the flip side, we have supporting actress in a comedy series, a category with eight slots, where completely align. In the guest categories it’s the opposite, where we match up on no more than half (3/6) in both.

In directing for a comedy series, the rules state that at least one multi-camera sitcom must be included regardless of the number of nominees or eligible submissions. Recent examples have included The Big Bang Theory, Will & Grace and B-Positive last year. Both Tyler and Erik have gone with B-Positive once again, but interestingly, with two different episodes. Is one of right or are we both wrong? It’s pretty open without a James Burrows-level name in play and we could see How I Met Your Father show up here.

Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 12 by JB Smoove, Melissa Fumero and Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Sherma, live on emmys.com at 8:30 a.m. PDT.
