Frontrunner Friday: No one knows anything (and that’s a good thing)
Frontrunner Friday has returned after a month to digest the impact that Venice, Telluride and Toronto had on the Oscar playing field and it was definitely substantial.
What it didn’t do, however, is solidify among us Oscar pundits an actual frontrunner. You ask one of us and they’ll say A Star Is Born has it. You ask another and it’s ROMA, breaking barriers and history. Another will say TIFF People’s Choice Award winner Green Book.
2019 Oscar Predictions (September)
It’s still a wide-open race people, one that often finds Oscar watchers at odds not just with others, but with themselves. Every year is rife with ‘early frontrunners are boring, there’s no surprise’ but the moment things are up in the air and there’s a real race on our hands, those same people get frustrated they can’t lock in predictions. Can’t have it both ways, folks.
As always, you can follow my 2019 Oscar predictions, updated live and in real time, in 21 categories right here.
Unlike previous Frontrunner Fridays, my predictions will only be a top 10 in Best Picture, top 5 in all other categories save Makeup & Hairstyling (a top 3) and Foreign Language Film (a prediction of the 9-film shortlist).
