Frontrunner Friday Oscar Predictions: A little bit here and there very randomly

Festival season is over, audience awards have been won and we even already have the first trickles of guilds and critics’ groups revealing nominations with Gotham, plus Cinema Eye Honors, International Documentary Association, Critics’ Choice giving us a keen eye into the documentary race. We also got the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) and European Film Awards (EFA) nominations, insights into the international feature film category and the Hollywood Music in Media Awards nominations for original scores and songs.

At this point, everything has been seen except for Damien Chazelle’s Babylon (that screens Monday, November 14) and James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (no screening date yet). Both are previous Best Director winners looking to make big Oscar comebacks this year.

AFI Fest gave new birth to Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans as a default frontrunner before things kick into gear in early December, as well as the chance for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio to become the first animated film to break into Best Picture since 2009’s Up and 2010’s Toy Story 3, the first two years of the expanded Best Picture lineup and in years, like this one, of a straight 10 nominees.

There’s not a whole lot of change from my October predictions but I have a feeling that official November predictions, which start next week, might find some upheaval. Coming up soon will be the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations on 11/22 and the Gotham Awards on 11/28.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
