Frontrunner Friday Oscar Predictions: It’s a New Dawn, it’s a New Day

The new year is bringing us the final pieces of the Oscar puzzle, even if we’re nearly four months away from the big show itself. Holdouts like Warner Bros’ Judas and the Black Messiah and The Little Things (which could push Denzel Washington into the race) are starting to screen and so is The United States vs Billie Holiday, which Hulu scooped up from the struggling Paramount Pictures, its third major handoff this season after The Trial of the Chicago 7 going to Netflix and Coming 2 America going to Amazon.

For USvBH‘s Andra Day, starring as legendary blues singer Billie Holiday, she hits all the hallmarks of a classic Best Actress nominee: playing a real-life person, boatloads of trauma including addiction and abuse, physical transformation and, even more importantly, the type of newcomer tour de force performance voters love.

But The United States vs Billie Holiday shouldn’t be one of those ‘lone nominee’ films. While Day is the clear standout (her supporting cast is fine but don’t have much of a shot and are really there to support and bolster her) the film itself is a thoroughly handsome production. From the rich score by Kris Bowers, to the dozens of meticulously decorated sets by production designer Daniel T. Dorrance and set decorator Pascale Deschênes, the flawless costumes by Paolo Nieddu or the period perfect makeup and hair by Ronald J. Wolfe, Charles Gregory Ross and Laini Thompson, director Lee Daniels (The Butler, The Paperboy) has fashioned a classic biopic full of grandeur, high and low drama and a star making turn. But does Hulu have what it takes to get the film into Best Picture or, better yet, does it need to?

One big missing piece of the puzzle, especially for Best Actress, is Zendaya in Malcolm & Marie. The trailer just dropped this morning and I won’t be seeing the film until Friday evening, after these predictions have posted. Word of mouth has been quite interesting and seeing some pundits put it on their top 10 list has me intrigued as to how far the newly minted Emmy winner can go in this very contentious race.

Here are my Frontrunner Friday Oscar predictions for January 8, 2021. For monthly predictions, click on each category title.
