Golden Globe Nominations – TELEVISION: Transparent, Jane the Virgin, The Affair Lead Newbie Noms
The Golden Globe nominations for television showed some the HFPA’s usual flare for recognizing freshman year shows and this year it was Showtime’s The Affair in Drama and The CW’s Jane the Virgin in Comedy. The Affair was a bit of a surprise with the more high-profile HBO drama The Leftovers seeming like an easy pick here. The Affair showed up in Best TV Series – Drama and both leads, Ruth Wilson and Dominic West, also got nominations. Jane the Virgin, a highly rated CW comedy, could go the way of Ugly Betty a decade ago and find the show’s star, Gina Rodriguez, with some Emmy love next year.
Netflix continues to pave a road for awards domination, gathering up six nominations across the Drama and Comedy categories, three of those for House of Cards. The Comedy Series category is a batch of fresh faces; three of the five are first season nominees. Transparent, Silicon Valley and Jane the Virgin bested the likes of Veep and Parks and Recreation. Speaking of Parks, last year’s winner and Golden Globes co-host Amy Poehler was snubbed altogether. That should make for some fun material at the show next month.
In the TV Movie or Miniseries categories Fargo and True Detective predictably swept. True Detective was placed in the Miniseries category at the Globes but competed in Drama Series at the Emmys this year. The Normal Heart also did well, getting nods for TV Movie, Best Actor for Mark Ruffalo (a double nominee today) and Matt Bomer in Supporting. Surprisingly, Julia Roberts was snubbed and Alison Tolman (Fargo) was promoted to Lead from Supporting at the Emmys.
