Golden Globe Nominations (TV): Mad Men Snubbed, Outlander, Mr. Robot In, what is Casual?
The television side of nominations from The Golden Globes gave some love to Empire after its SAG snub yesterday in the form of a Drama Series nomination but said ‘shut the door, sit down’ to Mad Men by snubbing its send-off season. In its place are this year’s Emmy winner for Best Drama Series, Game of Thrones, plus a trio of newcomers that are sure to make internet message boards and Netflix execs happy. Mr. Robot, Outlander and Narcos were all nominated for Drama Series. That also meant that the freshman season of Better Call Saul was left off. AMC shouldn’t be too sad though, both Jon Hamm and Bob Odenkirk scored Drama Actor noms. But, as we know, the Golden Globes are really fickle and like new blood more than previous winners. Last year’s winner for Drama Series (The Affair) and Drama Actress (Ruth Wilson – The Affair) didn’t make the cut.
Comedy Series exploded with streaming service success with Mozart in the Jungle and Transparent from Amazon, Orange is the New Black from Netflix and something called Casual. No really, I have no idea what that is. Or was, until this morning when I had to Google it. It’s a Hulu exclusive which is another notch in the streaming belt. Interestingly enough, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recently changed their eligibility rules in order to expand to streaming services and the results clearly benefitted the Television categories.
The second season of Fargo had a good day, oh you betcha. It scored three nominations; TV Movie/Miniseries and Actor and Actress in a TV Movie/Miniseries (Patrick Wilson and Kirsten Dunst, respectively). Lady Gaga (American Horror Story: Hotel) was nominated in the same category as Dunst and sets the stage for another Globe showdown between a pop star and an actress from Fargo. I’m pretty sure we all remember where we were when Madonna beat Frances McDormand back in 1997 (psst…Madonna deserved it).
There were two double nominees today: Idris Elba (TV – Luther, FILM – Beasts of No Nation) and Lily Tomlin (TV – Grace & Frankie, FILM – Grandma).
In all, American Crime, Outlander, Mr. Robot, Transparent and Wolf Hall all tied for the most nominations, with three apiece.
