Golden Globe Predictions from The Gold Rush Gang
The first batch of Golden Globe nomination predictions from The Gold Rush Gang are in and boy, are these tough this year! Between weird category placements and some still unknown, a few things are a shot in the dark even as the nominations are just over a month away.
Most of the top categories have a lot of symmetry between the GRG members with some interesting outliers and single votes. We’ve got Adam flying solo with Al Pacino for Danny Collins in the Musical or Comedy Actor, Jacqui is the sole vote for Room‘s Jacob Tremblay in Supporting Actor. In fact, that category has two other single vote getters; Paul Dano in Love & Mercy from yours truly and Joel Edgerton in Black Mass from Long. I must admit, despite rallying against the idea of Dano making it in I have relented a bit. I do think he could show up here. Although, with the HFPA really sticking to their guns about more clearly defining what makes a ‘musical’ and what qualifies as a drama (Love & Mercy and Straight Outta Compton are in Drama), that could make it difficult for Dano. Had he been submitted as Lead in Comedy or Musical, for example, (and the HFPA accepted that) he might stand a better chance. Continuing on that category, it holds no less than 11 contenders getting votes. Definitely a wide open field for lots of possibilities.
But what’s going on in Drama Actress? Everything seems like we’re all on the same wavelength and then, hold up. Kenneth and Evan are going for Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road? Color me intrigued? Is Theron wowing the HFPA? Is WB pushing hard behind the scenes? Interestingly enough, their votes to her aren’t even pulled from the same gal. Evan has Carey Mulligan (Suffragette) missing out even though eight of us have her in and Kenneth has Brooklyn‘s Saoirse Ronan out of luck despite nine of us having her making it. Curiousa Furiousa, indeed.
Drama Actor is a bit of a head-scratcher. While all of us see Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) getting in, there are some scattered votes for that 5th spot. Will Smith (Concussion) and Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies) have three and six, respectively, but then Michael Caine in Youth has a single vote from James. It really feels like Fox Searchlight has fumbled this movie and could have pushed it into Comedy without much fight from the HFPA. Maybe they still have a chance? Caine and the film would surely be able to show up there quite easily. Harvey Weinstein continues to push Southpaw, could he get Jake Gyllenhaal in here? Seems unlikely at this point.
Elsewhere there is real scatter in the Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. While everyone agrees that The Big Short, The Martian and Trainwreck are in, there are scattered votes for Grandma, Spy and Sisters littered about. Foreign Film and Score also see a wide range of films getting votes but Son of Saul has 10 votes in Foreign and in Score only Carol and Inside Out have all 10. Speaking of 10, that’s how many films have votes in Original Score. It’s a category, like Original Song, that often veers far off the path of Oscar so we could see some very random films getting a mention here.

Just so you know, Star Wars: The Force Awakens doesn’t premiere until after the Golden Globe nominations are announced. I don’t know if they’ll be sending screeners or albums with the score on it, but I doubt it as they wouldn’t want it to get leaked.
I’m happy to see The Second Mother is being considered for best foreign movie! I loved it!
