Golden Globes: The Crown and Atlanta pull of freshman wins on the TV side

In typical HFPA fashion, the Golden Globes got eccentric on the TV side of their awards ceremony, going largely for freshman shows, along with a couple of perplexing choices mixed in for good measure.
The main source of surprise this year came from the Limited Series side. While American Crime Story pulled off expected wins for Best Limited Series or TV Movie and Best Actress for Sarah Paulson, The Night Manager emerged as a surprise winner in multiple categories, pulling off the most wins of the night, with three overall. Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman won their respective supporting categories (the only category where all TV programs compete against each other), while Tom Hiddleston won Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie.
On the Drama side, streaming came out victorious, with Netflix taking home their first ever Series win at the Golden Globes with the Queen Elizabeth II drama The Crown winning Best Drama Series. The series also managed to pull off a Best Actress win for Claire Foy, in a slight upset over fellow Netflix star Winona Ryder. Best Actor in a Drama Series went to Billy Bob Thornton in Amazon’s Goliath, showing that Amazon continues to be a force with this awards body, after scoring big wins for Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle in the last two years.
Meanwhile, traditional TV platforms had an easier time on the Comedy/Musical side of things, where Atlanta pulled off wins for Best TV Series – Comedy/Musical and Best Actor (Comedy/Musical). The wins were among the more expected of the night since the Globes enjoy awarding freshman shows in this category, especially a show as positively hyped as Atlanta has been since it premiered in September. A bigger surprise came from Best Actress (Comedy/Musical), where Tracee Ellis Ross, becoming the first black actress to win that category since Debbie Allen won 34 years ago for Fame. She also provided network TV its only win of the night.
