Grammys change eligibility date thanks to 2020 Oscars
The 2020 Grammys are making a big change in their eligibility this year and it’s all because of the Oscars’ date change.
Artists will have 11 months, not the usual 12, for submissions in order to be eligible for Grammy nominations this year for next year’s awards. Music must be released by August 31st, one month earlier than the usual September 30th cutoff. Last year, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” was released just inside the eligibility (September 27th) and went on to earn four Grammy nominations and two wins.
This year’s Grammy nominations will cover an eligibility period between October 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019. Any material released after September 1st will be eligible for consideration at the 2021 awards.
This change comes as a result of the Oscars moving up the Academy Awards by two weeks, up to February 9th. The 2020 Grammys will move into what is becoming a very crowded January and air live on CBS on the 26th. No word on a nomination date yet.
