Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 led the nominations for the 71st Tony Awards this morning with 12, with Hello, Dolly! and Dear Evan Hansen next with 10 and 9, respectively.
The Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical is going to be a good fight with Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly as the favorite. The Emmy and Grammy winner has a special Tony she earned in 1974 but this is her first competitive nomination. Patti LuPone (War Paint) is a two-time Tony winner and Broadway royalty, and her co-star and co-nominee Christine Ebersole is also a two-time Tony winner. They’ll all face off with newcomers Denée Benton (in her Broadway debut with Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812) and Eva Noblezada (Miss Saigon), earning her first Tony nomination and, at 21, the youngest of the nominees.
The 2017 Tony Awards, hosted by Tony winner Kevin Spacey, are set for 8 p.m. on June 11th at Radio City Music Hall and will be broadcast on CBS.
