‘Hacks,’ ‘The Pitt,’ ‘The Traitors’ Win Big with LGBTQ Critics Dorian TV Awards
GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics—the second largest entertainment journalists’ group in the world, with a membership of more than 560 critics, journalists and media icons—this morning announced the winners of its 17th Dorian TV Awards where Hacks, The Pitt, and The Traitors came out on top with multiple wins.
For the third time, GALECA cited Hacks as Best TV Comedy, and star Jean Smart for Best TV Performance—Comedy. The women-in-showbiz satire also took home Best LGBTQ TV Show, Best Written TV Show, and Best Supporting TV Performance—Comedy for Hannah Einbinder (a second-time winner here). The series was recently renewed for a fifth season at HBO Max. Smart, a septuagenarian who’s notched a variety of TV successes over the past four decades, was also inducted as a GALECA TV Icon, joining the likes of Jennifer Coolidge, Christine Baranski and Carol Burnett as recipients of that career achievement honor.
Max’s freshman series The Pitt was named Best TV Drama. Veteran star Noah Wyle (ER) also earned Best TV Performance—Drama for his turn as grizzled doctor Michael “Robby” Robinavitch in the series, where each episode covers a single hour of life (and death) in the emergency room of a fictional Pittsburgh hospital.
GALECA’s Campiest TV Show honor went to The Traitors (Peacock), the Alan Cumming-hosted reality series based on mystery board games like Clue, with “traitors” and “faithfuls” vying for a cache of cash. The Traitors is so popular with members, the cheeky competition also outpaced perennial favorites like RuPaul’s Drag Race and The Great British Baking Show to win Best Reality Show for the second year in a row.
“This year’s Dorian TV winners prove once again that queer folks have an especially keen eye for stellar TV, using our culture’s lens to elevate the bold, brilliant, and blissfully bonkers,” said Diane Anderson-Minshall, GALECA’s Executive Director. “From Hacks’ dazzling domination to Ncuti Gatwa’s historic trailblazing, we’re proud to celebrate a wildly entertaining spectrum of talent and storytelling.”
Added GALECA’s President, Walt Hickey, “The Dorian Awards this year illustrate more than anything the depth and quality of TV right now, especially when it comes to shows by and for LGBTQ+ people. This year’s crop of winners made us laugh, inspired us, and delivered some of the most intense and rewarding performances many of our members have ever seen.”
Among other multiple winners was Severance, for Most Visually Striking TV Show and out gay star Tramell Tillman was named Best Supporting TV Performance—Drama for his role as Seth Milchick on the long-awaited second season of the series. Pee Wee as Himself, the two-part biodoc about Pee Wee Herman creator Paul Reubens won both of the group’s television documentary categories.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo triumphed in the TV Musical Performance category for their showstopping medley of tunes from Wicked, The Wiz and The Wizard of Oz opening the 97th Academy Awards earlier this year. Benito Skinner’s semi-autobiographical comedy series Overcompensating, detailing his coming out during his college years, was named Best Unsung TV Show.
In other special accolades, nonbinary multi-hyphenate and Tony Award winner Cole Escola (creator-star of the Broadway smash Oh, Mary!) earned GALECA’s Wilde Wit Award, following in the footsteps of such past winners as Julio Torres, Wanda Sykes, Bowen Yang and John Oliver. Meanwhile, Ncuti Gatwa—the Rwandan-born Scottish actor who is the first Black and out queer performer to portray the Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who—was named LGBTQIA+ TV Trailblazer.
GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics and its Dorian Awards honor the best in film, television, and theater at separate times of the year. With over 560 members, GALECA reminds the world that the informed LGBTQ perspective on all things entertainment matters. A nonprofit organization, GALECA also advocates for better pay, access, and respect for entertainment journalists (especially those most underrepresented), providing scholarships for LGBTQ journalism students and more.
