Hans Zimmer to Score Zack Snyder’s ‘Twilight of the Gods’ Netflix Animated Series (Exclusive)
Earlier today, Netflix unveiled its upcoming slate of animated projects – both film and television – for the next year during their Next on Netflix: Animation Preview event held at the Tudum Theater. During the presentation, the studio highlighted various projects from the final season of Big Mouth to Ultraman: Rising to the second season of the smash hit video game adaptation Arcane. One of the most anticipated titles featured, however, is Zack Snyder’s upcoming Norse mythology epic Twilight of the Gods. The series takes Snyder’s fascination with myth, and penchant for epic storytelling, to the medium of animation in this heroic story of love, loss, and revenge. The plot synopsis is as follows:
Twilight of the Gods is a spectacularly animated vision of Norse mythology. In a mythical world of great battles, great deeds and great despair, the mortal king Leif (Stuart Martin) is saved on the battlefield by Sigrid (Sylvia Hoeks), an iron-willed warrior with whom he falls in love. On their wedding night, they survive a wrath of terror from Thor (Pilou Asbæk) which sets them – and a crew of crusaders – on an against all odds and merciless mission for vengeance. From Stone Quarry Animation, the animated series is co-created by Zack Snyder, Jay Oliva and Eric Carrasco, and executive produced by Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Wesley Coller and Jay Oliva.
With such a massive story, Snyder was going to need a massive score to help bring everything to life, and who better to score this epic than the maestro himself, Hans Zimmer. During a conversation with Executive Producers Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller following the panel, Snyder exclusively revealed to me that Hans Zimmer and his collaborators will lend their talents to the music of Twilight of the Gods.
“We were so lucky to work with Hans Zimmer and have a really great relationship with him,” said Deborah Snyder. “Hans has an incredible team of composers he works with and together they crafted something that I think is super special. Zack really wanted it to feel authentic. It didn’t matter whether it was animated or live-action, he really wanted the story and the journey to come through and I feel like they did an amazing job in achieving that.”
“Without spoiling anything, I think the journey we go on takes us through these different moments, different spaces, and I think that the exploration Hans and his team did was such an amazing process,” said Coller. “They would start to present things early on and right out the gate they were landing these amazing sequences and pieces of music that were just beautiful. In terms of quality, it just doesn’t get any better than those guys. It sounds amazing.”
This collaboration between Snyder and Zimmer marks a reunion between the composer and director for the first time since 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Zimmer is no stranger to finding the right sound for epic storytelling, from his work on Gladiator, to Wonder Woman, to Pirates of the Caribbean, to Dune. Each project he tackles results in landmark entries in the canon of film composition. If the groundbreaking work Zimmer created with Snyder in the superhero cinema arena with Dawn of Justice and 2013’s Man of Steel is any indicator, then the musical landscape that comes with Twilight of the Gods is sure to be as revolutionary and epic as the mythological adventure the series is set to take us on.
