HCA TV Awards Night Two: ‘Severance,’ ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Dopesick’ win big for Streaming
The Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) revealed the TV award winners for Streaming programming during night two of their two-night television celebration at The Beverly Hilton, in a ceremony live-streamed on the official HCA YouTube channel. The ceremony was hosted by Carmen Esposito (after original host Tig Notaro had to drop out due to COVID), where the big winners were Severance, Ted Lasso, and Dopesick.
The Apple TV+ series Severance tied with Ted Lasso for first place with a total of 12 nominations each. Severance, which was created by Dan Erickson, received nominations for Best Streaming Drama Series, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Directing, and Best Writing. The buzzy series won Best Supporting Actor, Best Writing, Best Directing and Best Streaming Drama Series. Ted Lasso was nominated for Best Streaming Comedy Series and Best Short Form Animated Series. The critically acclaimed comedy also received nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Directing, and Best Writing. By the end of the night, Ted Lasso took home Best Supporting Actor and Best Streaming Comedy Series.
Netflix’s pop culture phenomenon, Stranger Things, is part of a three-way tie with the Hulu comedy, Only Murders in the Building, and the Hulu Limited Series, Dopesick with a total of 9 nominations each. Stranger Things has been the talk of social media ever since its season four debut on May 27th. The series received a Best Streaming Drama Series nomination as well as five acting nominations, two directing nominations, and one writing nomination, taking home a single award for Sadie Sink’s supporting performance. Only Murders in the Building was nominated for Best Streaming Comedy Series as well as five acting nominations, two directing nominations, and one writing nomination. Two leads from Only Murders, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, won awards for their leading performances in the acclaimed comedy. Dopesick was nominated for Best Streaming Limited or Anthology Series, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Directing, and Best Writing. Hulu’s limited series won Best Writing, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor and Best Streaming Limited or Anthology Series.
The categories weren’t totally dominated by any single show, however. HBO Max comedy Hacks, much like the Emmys of last year, took home the awards for Best Writing (for which all three of the series’ creators won) and Best Directing for Lucia Aniello. The series also took home the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Streaming Comedy for Hannah Einbinder. In the drama categories, Severance might have taken home many awards but the acting categories all had winners representing different shows. Laura Linney took home the award for Best Actress in a Streaming Drama for her role in Ozark and Lee Jung-jae won for Best Actor for his leading role in Netflix’s Squid Game. Dopesick won several awards in the Limited Series categories, but it was Pam & Tommy that took home a win for Best Directing in a Streaming Limited Series or Movie. The Hulu limited series also took home Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Limited Series or Movie, with Seth Rogen taking home the trophy. Star of The Dropout, Amanda Seyfried, won for her lead performance in the Lead Actress in a Streaming Limited Series or Movie.
Actors Sue Ann Pien, Rick Glassman, and Albert Rutecki, who star in the Prime Video series, As We See It, will be joined by the show’s creator, Jason Katims to accept this year’s Spotlight Award on Sunday, August 14th. The Spotlight Award recognizes a film or show that promotes representation and brings awareness to diverse and underrepresented voices in entertainment. “Films and TV shows that shine a light on autism have been widely overlooked in the entertainment industry until recently,” adds HCA Founder, Scott Menzel. “As we continue the fight for representation within the industry, it is important that authentic casting is represented in the type of the stories being told on screen. Shows like, As We See It are not only great for representation but as conversation starters which help to educate those who are not familiar with autism and how it impacts everyday lives.”
The cast and creators of the Paramount+ Original Series, produced by CBS Studios, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be bestowed this year’s Legacy Award on Sunday, August 14th. Strange New Worlds is the newest Star Trek series and has been met with an outpouring of love and support from fans and critics alike. “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the perfect show for our Legacy Award because it encapsulates everything that this award stands for,” suggests HCA Vice President, Nestor Bentancor. “The HCA Legacy Award celebrates a show that has taken a beloved property and, without relying solely on nostalgia, has been able to pay respectful tribute to the past while modernizing it in a fun and meaningful way, delighting original fans and a newer generation of devotees.”
As there was during night one of the HCA TV Awards, there was a designated Petco Love step and repeat with rescue dogs and puppies on the Red Carpet. Additionally, at the ceremony after-party, guests of the HCA TV Awards had the opportunity to adopt a rescue dog and give them a forever home.
