Interview: Chloe Domont on the Personal Nature of ‘Fair Play’ and Wanting to Watch Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich “Destroy Each Other” [VIDEO]

What do you do when a life-changing job promotion is on the table, but it comes at the risk of upending your relationship because your fiancé also happens to be eyeing the position? Do you take it, or do you run?

That’s the turmoil that Chloe Domont’s thrilling feature directorial debut Fair Play explores, and a situation that the writer-director has navigated herself. Domont said in a recent interview it was “hard to admit” she was facing that circumstance in her own life and the ways she tried to handle it by “undermining myself or minimizing myself.” But when she put down those feelings onto paper – in the form of corporate greed and toxic masculinity invading a young couple’s secret relationship – she felt a giant weight lifted off her shoulders.

Fair Play, starring Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich as a financial it-couple, took Sundance Film Festival audiences by storm in January. It’s a seductive thriller that puts society’s gender ideals on blast, and with its two leads giving the best performances of their careers thus far, you won’t be able to look away from this pressure cooker on the brink of explosion.

I spoke with Domont about her personal connection to the story at the center of Fair Play, writing about her fears and how Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich were the best leads for her film.
