Interview: Cristin Milioti and Billy Magnussen of ‘Made for Love’ on finding the reality of a virtual reality [VIDEO]

Made for Love is a show that seems purely satirical but the premise isn’t as far-fetched and the implications are certainly chilling. They’re also a minefield of great comedy.

The series, starring Cristin Milioti and Billy Magnussen, is based on Alissa Nutting’s work and describes a world that is so dependent on technology that a tech mogul is trying to develop a product that perfects relationships. One microchip that’s inserted into you and your partner’s brain is all it takes! The result is that your minds are forever synched. No secrets! No mystery! But what happens when only one of the partners in marriage and the other has access to their inner thoughts? Is that fair? Such is the case with tech tycoon Byron Gogol and his wife Hazel. On the surface, these two look happy but has Byron used her inner thoughts to create that illusion of bliss?

There’s certainly much to unpack in the series and I was lucky enough to have a chance to speak with the Milioti and Magnussen to discuss Made for Love, the issues that show addresses, having a fully female production team, what attracted each of them to the role, and why Magnussen revels in playing jerks on screen. 

Made for Love premieres today, April 1, on HBO Max.
