Interview: ‘Food Inc. 2’ Author/Producer Eric Schlosser, Directors Robert Kenner, Melissa Robledo Discuss Income Disparity and Social Impact [VIDEO]
Fifteen years ago, the world underwent a seismic shift with the release of Food Inc., the Oscar-nominated documentary that fundamentally altered the discourse surrounding our daily consumption habits. Now, in an era marked by the proliferation of ultra-processed foods, Food 2 emerges to illuminate the contemporary landscape of food production and consumption.
Landon Johnson had the privilege of talking with Eric Schlosser, the esteemed author of “Fast Food Nation,” alongside directors Robert Kenner and Melissa Robledo. Together, they provided insights into the objectives behind their sequel, legislative developments since the original film, and a pivotal call to action.
Schlosser penned “Fast Food Nation” over 25 years ago, witnessing a resurgence of interest in food-related literature since its publication. Reflecting on this, he remarked, “It’s gratifying to see that happen because it is such an important subject.” He underscored the socioeconomic disparity in food options, noting that while affluent individuals “are eating very well,” healthier alternatives remain prohibitively expensive for many Americans.
Moreover, he highlighted the pervasive influence of a handful of major food corporations, characterizing his book not merely as a treatise on food but as an exposé on the negative impact that unchecked corporate power has on a society.
Director Robert Kenner expressed astonishment at the unforeseen necessity of a sequel, remarking, “I never thought we would make a sequel, but when the pandemic hit, it brought into focus systemic flaws.” He referenced the dire circumstances faced by undocumented workers, coerced into risking their health by returning to work without adequate government support, which audiences get a first-hand look at in the film.
When asked what individual actions we could take to foster a healthier societal relationship with food, director Melissa Robledo advocated for a return to home cooking. “Well, we could cook more,” she suggested succinctly. The conversation encapsulates the urgency of Food Inc. 2, which is now available VOD, as it endeavors to shine a light on the complex nexus of food, power, and public health.
