Is the version that others see of yourself real or just the self you want others to know? This is the question that showrunner Veronica West (Ugly Betty) seeks to answer in Surface, which is set to hit AppleTV+ on July 29.

The new series stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show) as Sophie who suffers severe memory loss after a suicide attempt. At first, be prepared to be puzzled as Sophie’s life is pretty great. She has a loving husband (The Invisible Man’s Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and adoring friends that seemingly love her. However, we quickly begin to suspect that she could be being fed a truth others want her to live. Nothing is ever what it seems; twists, turns, and unexpected love triangles are woven within this thriller West delivers to audiences. What if you woke up one day and didn’t know your deep dark secrets and others did? Could they use that against you? Remember, nothing is ever what it seems with this show.

After watching the episodes provided by AppleTV+, AwardsWatch correspondent Dewey Singleton spoke with showrunner Veronica West and cast members Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Stephan James, who plays Baden. We attempted to answer some of these questions while remaining spoiler-free.

The first three episodes of Surface drops on AppleTV+ on July 29, with new episodes weekly.
