Interview: In ‘Driveways,’ Andrew Ahn longs for connection [VIDEO]

Whether it’s his short films, his award-winning feature breakthrough Spa Night or his latest film, Driveways, the creation of connection between people is at the core of Andrew Ahn’s work.

Driveways tells the story of a lonesome boy (brilliant newcomer Lucas Jaye) accompanies his wearied and scattered mother (Spirit Award nominee Hong Chau) on a trip to clean out his late aunt’s house, and ends up forming an unexpected friendship with the retiree who lives next door, played with empathetic perfection by Brian Dennehy.

Although it debuted way back in 2019 at the Berlin Film Festival, Driveways has gained new visibility thanks to its availability on Showtime and Hulu and the supporting actor critics mentions for the late Brian Dennehy.

I talked with Ahn about expectations post-Spa Night, expanding the world of Asian cinema, working with the late Dennehy on one of his last films and the queer coding of the Driveways‘ young protagonist.

Driveways is currently streaming on Showtime and available On Demand.

This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
