Phil Dunster has gone by many names on screen over the years. Some might recognize him as Count Andrei Razumovsky from the 2019 HBO limited series Catherine the Great and others might remember him as Chief Inspector Pembroke from the 2018 British television series No Offence. But now, the world has come to know him as Jamie Tartt on Ted Lasso which starts its 2nd season this Friday on Apple TV+.
The show, which was born from a series of Premier Football League ads on NBC is, in reality, a reflection of the brilliant collaboration of Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Joe Kelly, Brendan Hunt, and a team of writers that’s arguably one of the best in television (the Emmys would agree). Added to the mix is already one of the best ensembles ever assembled in television history.
Ted Lasso isn’t the critical success that it’s quickly become without this cast, much in the same way Cheers and Seinfeld were. While on the surface, Ted Lasso is about the title character searching for his own identity as his personal life is splitting at the seams, everyone on the show on their own journey. Dunster’s character Jamie has only known one way of being on the football pitch and has never learned humility in both his professional and personal life. At the end of season one, Jamie does play a large part in AFC Richmond’s relegation, but even as he celebrates the downfall of his former club, everything around him is slowly beginning to fray. That certainly is a major story arc in the 2nd season.
We were able to speak with Phil about the 2nd season of Ted Lasso and touched on what fans can expect and touched on the origins of his character too.
