Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAH) Awards: ‘Frankenstein, ‘One Battle After Another,’ ‘Sinners’ Take Top Wins

Frankenstein, One Battle After Another and Sinners have topped 13th Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706). Winners were announced last night at their annual ceremony honoring the best in their crafts at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, which was hosted by Rachael Harris.
Sinners won for both Best Period and/or Character Makeup and Hair Styling, while One Battle won for both Contemporary Make-Up and Hair Styling. Frankenstein won for Best Special Make-Up Prosthetics.
Both Sinners and Frankenstein are nominated for the Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar this year, alongside Japan’s kabuki drama Kokuho, the Dwayne Johnson wrestling biopic The Smashing Machine and the Cinderella body horror The Ugly Stepsister.
In the TV races, NBC’s Saturday Night Live led the way with three wins including one for its 50th Anniversary Special, while Apple TV’s The Studio and Palm Royale won two awards apiece, each picking up individual make-up and hair styling wins for contemporary and period, respectively.
Another double winner, in the Children and Teen Programming categories, was Disney+’s Skeleton Crew.
In television, Stranger Things and Dancing with the Stars led the nominations with four apiece and the makeup in Ariana Grande’s “eternal sunshine” and Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” music videos also earned nods.
Raging Bull and Michael Jackson’s Thriller makeup artist Greg Nelson was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for Make-Up, given by Robert Patrick and David Hussey, while Forrest Gump and The Matrix hairstylist Judy Alexander Cory received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Hair Stylists presented by Kathy Bates.
In special honors, Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning make-up artist Greg Nelson and Oscar-nominated hair stylist Judy Alexander Cory received the Lifetime Achievement Awards. Emmy-nominated make-up artist Michael Johnston received the prestigious Vanguard Award. Amy Madigan received this year’s Distinguished Artisan Award, which was presented by her Weapons director Zach Cregger and the film’s hair and make-up teams.
Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” won Best Makeup for a Music Video.
