The Broadway adaptations of a popular teen movie (Mean Girls) and a smash kids TV cartoon (SpongeBob SquarePants) were the top nomination getters at this morning’s Tony Awards nominations announcement. The pair of musicals each scored a massive 12 nominations apiece including Best Musical, Direction of a Musical, Book and Score of a Musical and a host of acting mentions.
The lead nominations for musicals saw a bit of an imbalance with just four nomination in Lead Actor and six in Lead Actress, which included the surprise nominee LaChanze for Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.
In plays, the revival of Angels in America topped the list with 11, while Harry Potter and the Cursed Child came in just behind with 10.
Two new Special Tony Awards were announced (added to the previously announced ones for Chita Rivera and Andrew Lloyd Webber) for Bruce Springsteen for his huge hit Springsteen on Broadway and John Leguizamo, who also earned a surprise nomination in Best Play for Latin History for Morons.
Tony winner Leslie Odom, Jr. (Hamilton) and Katharine McPhee, who is currently starring in Broadway’s Waitress, announced the nominations in 24 categories.
The 72nd annual Tony Awards, hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, will be broadcast June 10 on CBS, live from Radio City Music Hall.
