On the Shelf: ‘Bringing Out the Dead,’ ‘Evil Dead Rise,’ and ‘The Pink Panther’ Films Land on 4K Blu-ray for Week of January 12

As we start the new year, so begins another busy slate of physical media releases that every film fan will want to get their hands on. First up this week in an underrated gem from one of cinema’s greatest directors in Martin Scorsese and his 1999 feature film, Bringing Out the Dead. Starring Oscar winner Nicholas Cage, the film follows a veteran paramedic active in Hell’s Kitchen in the early 1990s. He has become burned out and is haunted by visions of the people he has tried and failed to save over the course of his career. Reunited with a script from his Taxi Driver, Raging Bull collaborator, Scorsese taps back into his youth of a struggling young man facing his internal demons while the city and institutions in New York City reshape themselves heading into the new millennium. It’s a film Cage once told me in an interview a few years back that this was the film in his filmography that he wish people would talk about more from his stellar career, and now you can see it in glorious 4K at home.
In the world of horror, director Lee Cronin’s take on Sam Raimi’s franchise, Evil Dead Rise, gets a 4K upgrade from our friends over at Arrow Video. Set within a big city rather than in the woods like the previous installments, we watch as a small family is forced to take down their mother/sister who has become possessed by the book of the dead. Never have the Deadites been so terrifying in this bold and blood-soaked revival of the classic series; with special features that include audio commentaries by Cronin, the film’s cast, special make-up effects designer Luke Polti, editor Bryan Shaw, composer Stephen McKeon, a 2013 short film from Conin called Ghost Train, and many more behind the scene features.
The biggest release of the week belongs to our friends at Kino Lorber from giving us not one, but FOUR films within the Pink Panther series on 4K with The Pink Panther, A Shot in the Dark, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, and Revenge of the Pink Panther. In the first film, David Niven stars as Sir Charles, an urbane British playboy who is secretly also smooth criminal “The Phantom.” The suave jewel thief sets his sights on stealing The Pink Panther — a large pink diamond whose name derives from its shimmering resemblance to a leaping feline — away from its keeper, the lovely and feisty Princess Dala (Claudia Cardinale). But he can’t get away with his plan if he stopped by the bumbling yet tenacious Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers), who somehow always finds a way to solve the case. From there on out, it set the stage for one of comedy’s most legendary series that was remade in the 2000s, but just didn’t have the magic of the original series. It’s the role that made Sellers an international star, and cemented the series as some of the greatest comedies of all time, with A Shot in the Dark being my personal favorite of the series. Sellers played the role seven times, and these are just a taste of the comedic magic Sellers and director Blake Edwards made, as The Return of the Pink Panther will be released next month by Kino, so get these now to start your new Pink Panther collection.
