On the Shelf: ‘Lost in Space,’ ‘The Two Jakes,’ Original Superman Film Collection Fly Home on 4K Blu-ray This Week

Happy Labor Day week to all who celebrate. Taking a look at the month of September, it looks to a giant month of releases stretched across a dozen distributors, with some of the biggest titles of the year being offer to film fan’s collections. The first week of the month is on the lighter side of things, though it features some heavy hitters that you’ll want to add. Starting at Arrow Video, the 1998 sci-fi, family adventure spectacle Lost in Space makes it voyage home. Based on the classic television series of the late 1960s, the film follows the Robinson family as they are selected to be the first family to colonize outer space. While aboard their spaceship, the Jupitar 2, it is tapered with mid-flight, causing it to stray off course to another time in space where the dangers of their past meet the realities of their future. Featuring an all-star cast that includes William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, Heather Graham, Lacey Chabert, Jack Johnson, Gary Oldman, Jared Harris, and Matt LeBlanc, Lost in Space was considered at the time a big swing and a miss, not making a profit at the box office or being well reviewed by the critics. But it has slowly formed a cult status, even earning the “so bad, it’s good” label, and now it gets its chance to stand out with a brand new 4K restoration of the film approved by director Stephen Hopkins. Other special features include archival and new commentaries by Hopkins and his crew, a video explore the building of the special effects seen in the film, a featurette exploring the film’s vision of the future, a Q&A with the original cast of the TV series, and so much more. If you’ve ever wanted to see the film that finally dethroned Titanic as number one at the box office, then pick up Lost in Space this week and see a silly with just as wild of a creative, technical vision as that film.
Over at Warner Bros., fresh off the success of James Gunn’s Superman this summer, the fine folks from WB have partnered with Amazon for a Steelbook exclusive release of the original Superman films (Superman, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut, Superman II, Superman III, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace) release on 4K Blu-ray. The Superman I-IV 5 Film Collection is the vital piece of cinematic superhero existence, with Christopher Reeve’s version of the iconic character still being the example of what Superman is/should be. From his Krypton infancy to Midwest boyhood to his career as Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent to his battles with Lex Luthor and other famous foes, we see Reeve’s Superman evolve over time and cement himself as a vital force of good in our culture. Without these ridiculous, corny, even bad at times movies (looking at you Quest for Peace), we wouldn’t have so many of the modern superhero movies that do work and audiences love even more than these films. But these films were and still are groundbreaking, and if you hold fondness for the genre, you’ll want to grab this and add it your shelf this week.

Speaking of Warner, at their Archive Collection, they are releasing a collection of two classic film stars that will for sure make film fans happy; Errol Flynn and Greta Garbo. For Flynn, it’s a six film collect covering films from 1938 to 1948 featuring such titles as The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk, Adventures of Don Juan, Santa Fe Trail, Edge of Darkness, and Objective, Burma. Known for being the iconic screen swashbuckler, getting three titles in this collection is key but getting his most known title in Robin Hood, especially on Blu-ray, is a must if you don’t own it already. It’s a blistering good take on the notorious outlaw and his band of merry men that you should see for Flynn’s incredible performance. It’s the type of adaptation that’s been remade over and over again and no one get it right because Flynn perfected the role. Alongside a couple of war picture, this is a fascinating snap shot into Flynn’s fascinating career choices. The Garbo Collection covers the actress over nine years and four films, Anna Christie, Camille, Ninotchka, and Queen Christina. In this quartet of films, Garbo, one of the finest actresses in cinema history, received three Oscar nominations for her work in Anna Christie, Camille, and Ninotchka, for which she should’ve won at least one of those Oscars. In Anna Christie, she plays an embittered prostitute returns home to confront her past, and is exceptional in the role. Her lose for Camille is a tough one to swallow considering she lost to Luise Rainer for The Good Earth, a truly awful win and performance. By picking up this collection of films, you can take in why Garbo was such a versatile actress, should’ve taken home some Oscar gold, and left Luise Rainer without anything by a cab ride once Hollywood’s biggest night was over.
Lastly, over at Kino Lorber, the sequel to one of the greatest films of all time makes its 4K debut with The Two Jakes. In the follow-up to the classic 1970s film Chinatown, star Jack Nicholson returns as private eye Jake Gittes and steps behind the camera to make this new mystery for the iconic character. The film follows as Jake takes on a routine case of marital hanky panky explodes into a murder that’s tied to a grab for oil—and to Jake’s own past. Rejected at the time of release as being a lesser version of the original film that came before, it’s gained a re-appreciation over time due in large part to Nicholson’s confident direction and committed performance. Featuring a brand new 4K scan from the original 35mm print, alongside new audio commentary from the actor David Keith, a behind the scene look at the editing of the film, and an archived interview with Nicholson, this new release of the film by Kino Lorber is not something you want to forget.
