SAG Nominations – ‘A Star Is Born’ leads with 4; ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ ‘The Favourite’ with 3
A Star Is Born led the Screen Actors Guild nominations for Motion Pictures with four nods today, Male Actor for Bradley Cooper, Female Actor for Lady Gaga, Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott and the ever-important Outstanding Cast nomination.
Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) are announced the nominees for the 25th awards live on TNT.
Joining A Star Is Born in the top category were two heavily predicted casts – Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians (who earned no other nominations) – plus BlacKkKlansman and the biggest surprise of the morning, Bohemian Rhapsody. Its star, Rami Malek, was nominated for Male Actor in a Leading Role as Freddie Mercury but this nomination for the film puts it into potential Best Picture territory.
That meant that the top category saw some shocking snubs. The Favourite grabbed three individual nominations yet could secure a Cast nom, making it the 22nd film in SAG’s 25-year history to do so and making its Best Picture hopes much more difficult. Last year, The Shape of Water became the first film to win the Best Picture Oscar without a Cast nomination at SAG first. Green Book earned two individual nominations for Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali and ROMA came up empty-handed. The massive ensemble of Vice missed out on that top nom despite Christian Bale and Amy Adams getting in.
BlacKkKlansman was next with three nominations: Cast, Actor (John David Washington) and Supporting Actor (Adam Driver). Emily Blunt earned two nominations herself – in lead for Mary Poppins Returns and supporting for A Quiet Place.
Supporting Actor panned out pretty much exactly as most predicted with Ali, Elliott and Driver joined by Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). Supporting Actress threw wrenches in with the Blunt nom but also Margot Robbie (Mary Queen of Scots). That put critics’ favorite and Oscar frontrunner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) out in the cold. Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) and Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) are announcing the nominees for the 25th annual ceremony.
The 25th annual SAG Awards will air LIVE on TNT and TBS January 27, 2019 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET and be hosted by four-time SAG-winning actor Megan Mullally.
