Satellite Awards winners: ‘Beale Street,’ ‘ROMA,’ ‘ A Star Is Born,’ ‘BlacKkKlansman’

The International Press Academy (IPA) today announced the winners for the 23rd Annual Satellite Awards. Motion Picture wins include If Beale Street Could Talk, BlacKkKlansman and The Favourite. Top Television series wins were entirely freshman shows: Homecoming, The Terror and Lodge 49, in separate categories..

Alfonso Cuarón’s ROMA from Netflix leads with four major wins. Set in 1971, the black-and-white look back at Cuarón’s childhood has won Best Director, Best International Film (Mexico), Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.

Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut A Star Is Born, headlined by Lady Gaga, picked up three major wins in the category of Best Picture, Musical or Comedy, as well as
Cinematography, and Best Song for “Shallow.”

“In 2018 we had a surge of talented filmmakers, which makes it difficult to narrow the field,” said IPA President Mirjana Van Blaricom. “Some of these films will become part of moviemaking history.”

Major acting wins include Glenn Close for The Wife from Warner Bros as Best Actress in Motion Picture, Drama; and Olivia Colman for The Favourite from FOX Searchlight as Best Actress for Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

Willem Dafoe’s near picture-perfect casting in Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate
about the life of Vincent Van Gogh has been recognized with Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama; and Rami Malek, who soared as Freddie Mercury in Queen epic Bohemian Rhapsody, won Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) and Richard Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) both won for supporting roles. Additionally, Can You Ever Forgive Me? topped
the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

Annapurna Pictures’ If Beale Street Could Talk won Best Motion Picture, Drama, and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman from Focus Features is Best Motion Picture, Independent.

Notable television award winners are Amy Adams for Sharp Objects, Darren Criss for The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Julia Roberts for Homecoming, and Brendan Gleeson for Mr. Mercedes from showrunner David E. Kelley based on the novel by Stephen King. Winners in supporting roles are Sharon Stone in Mosaic, and Hugo Weaving in Patrick Melrose. Issa Rae in Insecure (HBO) and Bill Hader in Barry (HBO) both won in the category Series, Comedy or Musical.

The 23rd Satellite Awards presentation is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 in Los Angeles. Here is the full list of winners.
