Screen Actors Guild (SAG) film nominations: ‘Da 5 Bloods,’ Ma Rainey,’ ‘Minari,’ ‘Trial of the Chicago 7’ lead; Chadwick Boseman makes history
The nominations for the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards for Motion Picture were announced this morning with some eerily similar and some drastically different choices than yesterday’s Golden Globe shockers.
Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari and The Trial of the Chicago 7 led the film nominees on Thursday morning with three nominations each, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. One Night in Miami also earned a nomination there, along with Leslie Odom, Jr. for Male Actor in a Supporting Role.
While Da 5 Bloods earned three nominations – the other two were for Chadwick Boseman and for the film’s stunt team – but missing once again was big critics’ winner Delroy Lindo. The nominees for Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Motion Picture were Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal, Boseman for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Anthony Hopkins for The Father, Gary Oldman for Mank and Steven Yeun for Minari.
Speaking of Chadwick Boseman, the late actor made SAG history this morning earning four Screen Actors Guild nominations all in the film categories, two individual and two as a part of the casts of Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He is the first actor to be nominated for four SAG awards in a single year in a single field.
Three of the biggest surprises at the Golden Globes found themselves repeating here at SAG today. Young German star Helena Zengel was nominated for Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her largely wordless role in News of the World. Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) overcame tough competition like Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman), after her lead nomination at the Globes yesterday and previous SAG and Oscar winner Jared Leto was nominated for Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his creepy could be serial killer in the very late breaking The Little Things. In earning those nominations they shut out the likes of Amanda Seyfried in Mank and Paul Raci in Sound of Metal.
Other big misses included Sophia Loren (The Life Ahead) and Andra Day (The United States vs Billie Holiday), missing out on a lead nomination to Amy Adams in Hillbilly Elegy.
Here is the full list of motion picture nominations for the 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards, which were announced on the SAG Awards Instagram live this morning by Daveed Diggs and Lily Collins. The SAG Awards will be presented on Sunday, April 4 and simulcast on TNT and TBS on Sunday, April 4, 2021, at 9pm (ET) / 6pm (PT).
