Sound of Metal and News of the World topped the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) 68th Golden Reel nominations, which were announced on Monday.

Both films are nominated in the Feature Underscore, Feature Dialogue/ADR and Feature Effects/Foley categories while a host of films earned two of those, including Greyhound, The Trial of the Chicago 7 and The Midnight Sky. Musicals and music biopics like The Prom and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom earned nominations and Mank‘s period specific mono score earned one nomination for Feature Dialogue/ADR.

“We’re very excited about this year’s MPSE Golden Reel Awards,” MPSE president Mark Lanza said. “It will feature a dynamic, virtual format that will be great fun and allow people from around the world to participate. We will have presenters from every part of the globe along with many other surprises. Most importantly, this will be an opportunity to celebrate the great sound work that has been done over the past year. I congratulate all of this year’s distinguished nominees.”

While Sound Editing used to have its own category apart from Sound Mixing at the Oscars, the two are now re-combined into one. Up to five people may be nominated, comprised of sound designers from

The Golden Reels also will honor Mad Max franchise director George Miller with the 2021 MPSE Filmmaker Award.
