TCA Awards: ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ ‘Watchmen’ dominate
The Television Critics Association (TCA) have chosen HBO’s Watchmen, HBO’s Succession and POP TV’ Schitt’s Creek as the top programs of the year, it was announced today.
Watchmen, which is up for 26 Emmy nominations, swept with four wins: program of the year; new program; outstanding achievement in movie, miniseries or special; and individual achievement in drama, for actor Regina King.
Schitt’s Creek followed with two wins, for comedy and Catherine O’Hara for individual achievement in comedy. In her video acceptance speech, O’Hara said, “I try not to take anything said about me too seriously, but your very kind encouragement and this award is making it very difficult to keep my head on straight.” Succession was chosen for outstanding achievement in drama.
HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch show topped the Sketch/Variety Show category, besting Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. “It’s just an honor to be nominated against all my friends, and I’m so happy that we beat them,” said Robin Thede, creator, writer, executive producer and actor of A Black Lady Sketch Show in her virtual acceptance speech.
Nomination leader Unbelievable, from Netflix, went home empty-handed.
The special career achievement honor went to Jeopardy host Alex Trebek, while CBS and Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek won the heritage award.
The TCA Awards are selected by more than 200 professional television critics and journalists from the United States and Canada, with voting having taken place virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Both Watchmen and Schitt’s Creek were also big winners at the Dorian Awards toast this weekend, both dominating their categories. Each show is the favorite in their respective category at next weekend’s Emmy Awards.
