‘The Bear,’ ‘Succession’ Top 2023 TCA Awards Winners
The final season of HBO’s Succession and first season of FX’s The Bear were double winners at the 39th Television Critics Association (TCA) awards announced today. Succession was named Program of the Year and took home its third for Achievement in Drama. The Bear won New Program and Achievement in Comedy. The TCA is comprised of more than 200 voting member, with eligibility dates following the 2022-2023 TV season. The annual in-person event was canceled due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Individual achievements went to Better Call Saul‘s Rhea Seehorn for drama and Poker Face‘s Natasha Lyonne for comedy. Netflix shows Beef and I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson won Achievement in Movies/Miniseries/Specials and Variety/Talk/Sketch, respectively, while Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty won for Achievement in Reality.
“This was a landmark year for television, as we said goodbye to several powerhouse series while welcoming a new generation of shows and stars into this highly competitive landscape,” said outgoing TCA president and Salon TV critic Melanie McFarland. “Whether established hits or first-year favorites, our honorees exemplify the strength of television and the unique depth that it allows creators to explore. Though we are unable to gather in 2023, we sincerely congratulate each of this season’s winners, and we hope to celebrate in-person in 2024.”
The Heritage Award went to The Carol Burnett Show, which earned 25 Emmys during its run on CBS. The Career Achievement Award went to EGOT winner Mel Brooks, whose career has earned him four Emmys, three Grammys, three Tonys and an Oscar.
