‘The Mysterious Benedict Society,’ ‘Sneakerella,’ ‘Heartstopper,’ ‘Sweet Tooth’ lead 1st Children’s & Family Emmy Awards nominations
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) today announced the nominations for the first annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, where The Mysterious Benedict Society and Sneakerella, both from Disney+, led the way with 11 nods apiece including Outstanding Young Teen Special and Outstanding Fiction Special, respectively. They were followed by Netflix’s Heartstopper and Sweet Tooth, which earned nine apiece. Collective Sesame Street programming earned 10 nominations.
Overall, Netflix dominated with 85 nominations, followed by Disney+ with 59. AppleTV+ and HBO/HBO Max came in with 17 apiece and Disney Channel with 14.
Children’s & Family content represents the fastest-growing genre that NATAS awards, with a 23% increase in related programming the past two years. With more than 3,000 submissions, the competition is now the largest that NATAS oversees.
“Putting a spotlight on children’s & family programming after years of unparalleled growth in content quality and quantity in this space is an exciting moment for the television industry,” said Adam Sharp, President and CEO, NATAS. “These programs entertain, inform and educate family members of all ages, and NATAS is proud to mark this milestone event and give these creators the stage they deserve.”
The 1st Children’s & Family Emmy Awards will be presented on Saturday, December 10 (Creative Arts) and Sunday, December 11 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles. The Children’s & Family awards are the first standalone expansion of the Emmy Award competition since 1979, and mark the successful culmination of the first full year of the realignment between NATAS and the Television Academy.
