WGA Awards: ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ ‘Get Out,’ ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Topline Guild Wins

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) have chosen Call Me By Your Name (Sony Pictures Classics) and Get Out (Universal) as the best screenplays of 2017. They each also earned the most screenplay wins during critics’ season in their respective categories – Adapted and Original. They enter the Oscars as favorites but Original Screenplay is a much tougher category this year and Jordan Peele will have some stiff competition, including a film that wasn’t eligible here – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Fox Searchlight). Last year, Moonlight hopped categories, winning Original here but being considered Adapted for both USC and the Oscars. It ended up winning all three.

Brett Morgan won the Documentary Screenplay prize for Jane (National Geographic). That film continues to rack up guild wins (it also won PGA last month) all while having been snubbed at the Oscars.

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale won Drama Series in its first year of eligibility and coupled it with the New Series award. Gordon Smith won the award for best episode of a drama series for the “Chicanery” from AMC’s Better Call Saul. This is the second win in a row for the show in this category. Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally won the Episodic Comedy award for the “Rosario’s Quinceañera” segment of NBC’s Will & Grace. This is Will & Grace‘s first WGA win and second nomination. HBO’s Veep won Comedy Series, its third in that category, and the network’s huge hit Big Little Lies took home the Long Form Adapted prize.

At the WGA West ceremoney in Los Angeles special honors went to: The Post writers Liz Hannah and Josh Singer with Paul Selvin Award; Milk writer Dustin Lance Black with the Valentine Davies Award for his work for the LGBTQ community; Mary Tyler Moore show co-creator James L. Brooks with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement; writer-producer Alison Cross (Roe vs. Wade, Murder in the First) with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement; and late comic-book icon Len Wein, co-creator of Wolverine, with the Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award.

In New York, the WGA East honored Tina Fey & Robert Carlock (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence; Geoffrey Ward (The Vietnam War, The Roosevelts) with the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement; and Hamilton Nolan (Splinter News/Gizmodo Media Group) with the Richard B. Jablow Award for devoted service to the guild.
